What this solution brief helps you decide
Copilot inherits the access people already have, so assess that before the pilot.
Microsoft 365 Copilot works within the access a user already has. It does not grant access on its own, but it makes existing oversharing, old permissions and inconsistent information protection far easier to find, because people begin asking questions across company content instead of browsing to it.
This brief assesses five readiness areas on tenant evidence: licensing, data governance, sensitivity labels, sharing posture and Purview coverage. Gaps become owned actions with a name against each one, and the pilot gets an explicit gate: who approves it, which evidence is required, which users are in scope, and the date the assessment is repeated.
It also sets the expectation for leadership. A readiness score is not a Microsoft certification and cannot promise a risk free rollout, so the useful output is the list of actions that must close before access expands, not the score itself.
- Why Copilot makes existing access exposure visible rather than creating it.
- What the five readiness areas cover, and what tenant evidence each one needs.
- How to turn readiness gaps into owned actions with a closing date.
- What has to be true before the pilot is approved, and again before it is widened.
- How to describe a readiness result without overstating what it establishes.
What you get
- Two pages: where the decision gets difficult, what changes and how you measure it, and the four questions to settle first.
- Three measures to track: the five readiness areas, open actions by owner, and pilot scope and gate.
- A scope statement on what a readiness score does not establish.
- One live decision to test the approach on, using one defined pilot group and its intended use.
Who it is for
IT leaders, security and information owners, business sponsors and MSPs planning a Copilot pilot. Short enough to forward to the business sponsor asking why the rollout has not started, with the evidence the security owner needs attached to it.
