EfficientEther Research

Evidence for the decisions you have to defend.

Packaging budgets, Cloud PC business cases and Copilot rollouts are usually approved on a vendor's promise. EfficientEther Research publishes the evidence instead: open studies, price benchmarks and field guides, each stating its sample, its method and what it does not prove.

MSIX at Scale: an automated packaging study of 3,261 Windows application cases

90.68%of 3,261 attempted cases produced an MSIX package
  • Package produced2,957 (90.68%)
  • Installed and registered2,919 (89.51%)
  • Selected entry point started2,638 (80.90%)
  • Complete smoke-test pass2,610 (80.04%)

Each percentage uses all 3,261 cases. The stages overlap, so they must not be added together.

How we research

Four rules every study follows, and the claims we will not make even when the numbers would let us.

3,261 of 3,261

Every attempt counts

Cases that stopped early stay in the denominator, so a headline rate cannot be inflated by quietly dropping failures.

4 stages

Real installers, recorded stages

Applications come from the public Windows Package Manager catalogue. Each case is recorded at build, install, launch and clean-up.

CC BY 4.0

Reproducible and citable

Case-level results and the Python scripts that recalculate every table ship with the paper, under a DOI you can quote.

Declared

Interests stated

We build EtherApps Forge, the tool used in the packaging study, and say so in the paper. Preprints are not yet peer reviewed.

What we will not claim

The limits of the MSIX at Scale study, as published with it.

  • Not a general compatibility rate. Applications came from catalogue searches, not a random sample of your estate.
  • Not proof of production readiness. Business-task testing and long-term reliability were not measured.
  • Not a time or cost saving. There was no comparison with manual packaging.
  • Not independently repeated. The supplement exists so that someone can.

The six-rung evidence ladder

"It worked" always needs qualifying. Rungs 1 to 4 can be automated for every package; rungs 5 and 6 remain your decision gates.

  1. Check the sourceInstaller type, silent switches, dependencies
  2. Capture the installRecord what the installer really changes
  3. Build and sign MSIXManifest, signing certificate, fix-ups where the evidence calls for them
